-----------------------------------------------------------------------

This program was originally conceived as a way to train grass-roots leaders within the various neighborhoods in Jefferson County. Over time, it has attracted a varied student base that represents a wide range of career and economic backgrounds. It is now the official leadership training program for the Jefferson County Chamber of Commerce.

The class meets one week-day morning a month for 8 months and a one evening session. Each month features a topic, among which are Information Gathering and On-Line Research; Local Government; Educational Services; Legal and Safety Issues; Leadership Styles; Conflict Resolution; Media Issues; and Social Services. Local experts in each field present to the class, which is informal and interactive. This year the class attended a legislative session in Columbus.

Guest lecturers have included judges, police department officials, county commissioners, mayor and city manager, school superintendents, media personalities, and many more. Since the class is small, each student gets the opportunity to ask questions, make comments, and enter into meaningful discussion with the speakers.

Graduates of the program gain a working knowledge of the community institutions and facilities. They learn how to go about working with the "system", and possibly help bring about changes and improvements.

The project is co-sponsored by Jefferson Community College and is self funded.
